A pizza joint for Langside Street at Sara?

UPDATE: The variance was granted for the pizzeria and 28 seat patio.

May 21, 1920, Winnipeg Free Press

The cute little building at 164 Langside Street at Sara could soon become a pizza restaurant.

I lived around the corner from this place for about a decade in the late 90s, soon after its 75 or so year run of being a grocery store had passed. I remember it being abandoned, then rejuvenated as an architect's office and arts studio.

Under the present zoning, a restaurant / cafe is allowed. What the applicant is seeking is permission for an outdoor patio that can hold 28 people, slightly bigger than that currently allowed by the city.

The city's administration is supporting the move, with some restrictions such as: patio hours would be 10 pm weekdays and 11 pm weekends; no amplified music; no illuminated signs, etc.

The application goes before the Board of Adjustment on July 27th. You can read the report here.

It is interesting to see a closed retail establishment in the midst of a residential area reopening. Older neighbourhoods were once dotted with such storefronts that housed shops, salons, barbers, etc.. Over the decades, however, most of them have either been converted into housing or simply torn down.

It will also be interesting to see what the neighbours think about the pizzeria and patio idea, especially in the uniquely urban neighbourhood that is West Broadway.
